The short version
This site sets no HTTP cookies. It uses local storage and session storage in your browser instead. Those values stay in the browser and are not automatically sent with every web request, as cookies are.
Before you choose, and after you decline, we still count page views and clicks as anonymous hourly totals. These events have no visitor or visit identifier and store nothing on your device. They do not create a browsing history or a recording. If you decline, we store only the choice itself so we can remember it.
We store your choice when you make one. The analytics ids, and the counter a session recording uses, are created only if you select Allow analytics, and we delete them if you later decline. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking, and we do not share this information with an ad network.
What we store
| Name | Type | What it does | How long | Needs consent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
jov_cookie_choice | Local storage | Remembers whether you allowed or declined analytics and session recording, so we do not ask again on every page. | Until you clear site data or change your choice | No — it records your choice |
jov:v:jov | Local storage | A random id for this site, used to count repeat visits from this browser as one person. Created only after you allow analytics. | Until you decline, clear site data, or we clear it for you | Yes |
jov:visitor:jov | Session storage | A random id for this browser tab, used to group one visit and avoid counting a page refresh as another person. Created only after you allow analytics. | Until you close the tab, decline, or clear site data | Yes |
jov:rseq:jov | Session storage | Numbers the pieces of a session recording in order, so a visit that spans several pages plays back as one. Created only after you allow analytics. | Until you close the tab, decline, or clear site data | Yes |
jov:me:jov | Local storage | The name, email address and phone number you last sent us in a form, so the next form or the chat can fill them in for you. Only those three. Kept on your device; we never store them from here. Not written if you declined analytics. | Until you clear site data | Yes |
jov:consent:jov | Local storage | The same choice, kept by our analytics script so that it never identifies or records you without it — including on a later visit. Written when you choose. SDK 1.7 no longer writes jov:optout:jov; it reads old refusals and then clears that legacy key. | Until you clear site data or change your choice | No — it records your choice |
Two analytics fields are kept on our server rather than in your browser: the country your connection appears to come from and a keyed, one-way scrambled form of your IP address. We create both only after you allow analytics. The scrambled value cannot be turned back into your address. The privacy page explains both fields in more detail.
You can check the list yourself. Open your browser's developer tools, find Application or Storage, and look under Local Storage and
Session Storage for https://jov.co.za. Before you choose, analytics creates
no entries. After you decline, the choice is remembered in jov_cookie_choice and jov:consent:jov, with no analytics ids or
recording counter. If you find another analytics
JOV entry, please tell us at hello@jov.co.za.
Changing your mind
You can change your choice here at any time without emailing us or completing a form. Declining stops identified analytics and recording immediately and deletes the ids and recording counter already stored. Anonymous page-view and click counts continue as hourly totals, with no identifier or analytics storage. If you allow analytics again later, the system treats that browser as a new visitor.
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we treat it as a refusal and never ask. Only anonymous page-view and click counts are sent, with no identifier or recording. This page will not show you a choice, and no setting on our side can override the browser's refusal.
The Cookie settings button in the footer of every page opens the same choice.
Blocking it yourself
Every major browser can block storage for a site. Clearing the site data for jov.co.za removes everything in the table above. The site still works, but we will ask about analytics on your next visit because clearing the data also removes the record of your choice.
We do not use fingerprinting, ETag tricks or another method to recreate an id you have cleared.
On the websites we build for clients
A client's website may use the same tracking tool. On that site, the client business decides whether analytics is on and what its visitors are told. That business is the right place to ask about its privacy choices.
Each site generates its own ids. The id from jov.co.za cannot recognise you on a client's site, and a client's id cannot recognise you here. Clients can ask us to switch analytics off entirely; the two roles section explains who is responsible for what.
